What a night for the North-West coast of Tasmania last Saturday night in Hobart, Smithton owner-breeders Trevor and Marjorie Leis tasted success when their Vincent filly Swiatek Leis claimed the fillies division of the Two-year-old Sweepstakes. The win gave the Leis their third success in the Sweepstakes following Zyganov Leis (1996) and Litvinko Leis (2007) who were successful in colts and gelding division of their year.

The Leis have been breeding and racing standardbreds since the early 1970’s when Trevor moved to Smithton to work as a veterinarian.

After failing to purchase a filly called Peta Paige Trevor Leis ended up purchased her mother Valencia Bay a daughter of Scotty Belmont, Valencia Bay appears as the third-dam of Swiatek Leis.

Leis did eventually end up with Peta Paige as a broodmare at the end of her racing career. Peta Paige went on to produce Herbition who won 18 races including the Raider Stakes and Zyuganov Leis 31 wins.

Vincent, Swiatek Leis sire is doing an amazing job, he has 12 individual two-year-old winners this season and has sired 29winners from 62 starters.

The colts and gelding division winner went to Art Major gelding Hazewillrev who remains unbeaten in four lifetime starts. Hazewillrev is also from the Nort-West coast being trained by Craig Hayes at Stowport and a group of owners including Mick “The vegi man” Filleui and football administer Rob Gillies.
