Glencoe couple Peter and Lesley Medhurst, whose list of sales graduates is headed up by Jamaican Rock and No Notthebuttons, will have a three-strong entry at the Southern Stars Yearling Sale at the Gawler Barossa Jockey Club Complex on Sunday, February 11.
The impressive trio are the end product of more than three decades of breeding excellence, breeding mares from the leading Australasian maternal families and sending them to the best stallions available.
The draft is spearheaded by two colts by the former USA 2YO Colt of the Year Stay Hungry 1:47.6 ($1.3million), whose first two crops have won more than $9million with nine in the 1:50 list including the world champion Seven Colors.
The first of the Stay Hungry’s is Lot 1, a colt from the Southern Cross Final placegetter Royal Jacquard (1:53.5), a half-sister to the Southern Cross placegetter Maffioso Girl and heat winner Bee Gees Bandit ($137,743).
“He’s a very compact colt and a free-legged pacer like you wouldn’t believe. He absolutely powers along,” preparer Mandy Pascoe, who manages Ningana Park with daughter Samantha, said.
“He’s an absolute natural, a beautiful rich bay/brown and quite clever. If you teach him something he nails it.”
The second Stay Hungry colt is Lot 11, the first foal of the handy racemare Crown Royale, who ranks as a half-sister to the multiple classics placegetter Partyatthebeach and Crowning Glory (21 wins).
He’s from the same family as the Southern Cross winners Thorninmyside, Jax Navaro, King Grin and Forty Seven Flash.
“He’s a stunning type of colt. He’s probably the pick of the lot on type. A real eye-catcher,” Mandy said.
The final entry from the Medhurst’s is Lot 13, a colt by the Australian 2YO and 3YO Colt of the Year and millionaire pacer Bling It On out of the Southern Cross placegetter Shania Black (10 wins), a daughter of the Southern Cross and SA Ladyship winner Jet Lane.
“He’s a big, strong boy, a black colt with lots of style about him. He’s a good horse to work with and a quick learner,” Mandy stated.
The three colts are eligible for the $50,000 and $25,000 sales races for two-year-olds in 2025, the Southern Cross and Vicbred.
