Nathan Bennett a fourth generation dairy farmer from Ringarooma in Tasmania’s North East is ASBA breeder of the month of February along with his wife Sandra
The Bennett’s milk around a 150 cows per day on their 250 acre property at Ringarooma but their passion is breeding and owning standardbreds.
In 2013 Nathan decided that if he was going to be successful breeding that dream champion he need to upgrade his broodmares, so he headed to the a disposal sale of prominent Western Australian breeder Rob Watson, of Soho fame, and came home with two quality mares.
Soho Summer a Western Ideal mare who is the dam of recent Burnie Cup winner Colby Sanz and this years Devonport Cup winner Sunny Sanz, was one of the two mares he purchased.
The other mare from the Watson sale to find her way to Tasmania was Soho Knightly a Mach Three mare already the dam of three winners.
“I decided if we were going to breed nice horse we need to up grade our broodmares” Bennett said.
Soho Knightly is currently in foal to Inter-dominion champion Ultimate Snipper, while Soho Summer is presently in foal to super sire Captaintreacherous.
Asked how Nathan dose his pedigree matching he replied “I don’t really rely on matching too much I have a rule I don’t go to stallions who have only left one or two good horse.”
The Bennett’s breed to race “I read once its better to race with the well bred ones than race against them” he added.
Kent Rattray based at Lietinna has the responsibility of training the Bennett’s racehorses, “Kent has been part of our racing family for many years in fact he trained for my Dad” Bennett claimed.
Nathan and Sandra Bennett may only be small select breeders of standardbreds but it breeders like the Bennett’s that our industry keeps our industry going..
