Gawler pacing cup first run in 1941 now 82nd edition this Sunday.

The 82nd running of the time-honoured Gawler Cup is on this Sunday; the Cup was first run in 1941 and won by a son of the legendary Globe Derby named Andy Derby.

Globe Derby also appears as the broodmare sire of two other Gawler Cup winners them being Galleon (1948) and Hatteras (1948)

The cup was not conducted between 1942 and 1945 due to World War 2 but on return, the 1946 edition was won by Predonis the following year the former Sydney sider Walaven a son of the Walla Walla.

Over the years some big names have won the Cup in 1976 Aachens Folly added the Gawler Cup to his Kapunda Cup trophy, and the super mare Murdock Miss won the event in 1981 the same year she claimed the SA Cup before heading across the Nullarbor to West Australia, Murdoch Miss went on to win 11 metro races in the west.

Whirley Dream claimed the Cup in 1987, and other big names to win the prestigious race in more recent times include Conte De Cristo (2009), Mark Dennis won the Gawler Cup twice in 2014 and again in 2016. War horse Bulletproof Boy won in 2019, Grey Maverick caused an upset when he took out the cup in 2020, and in 2021 Joes A Character added the Gawler Cup to his victory in the Italian Cup.

The Greg Scholefield-trained Stratofortress won in 2022 and last year Clarenden Envoy was victorious trained by Clare Gobel.

So, who will be the 2024 winner 12 in form pacers will face the barrier stands on Sunday Assassination and Culter King have drawn 10 metre handicap while Artilley (Culter King’s full brother) along with Lord Zarias have the back mark of 20 metres.

Chances off the front line include Sir Lucas, last start winner Justanextragrand, while Jimmy Locke who has won two of his last four starts has drawn the second line.

The Gawler Cup is steeped in tradition, who will add their name to the history of this great Country Cup.
